My amazing weekend

Image
Last weekend was ahhh-mazing!  On Friday night we baked the above cauliflower, potato, pancetta, cheese pastry for dinner and watched I-can't-remember-what. On Saturday we woke late-but-not-too-late, and met a friend and had Prahan market's super delicious Mushroom burgers – really a favourite of mine – as well as mussels which is a rarity because I do not actually like eating mussels. Then we watched many episodes of How To Get Away With Murder. On Sunday we went to church, had a good discussion over lunch, shopped, found new glasses to replace my scratched up ones, and finished the rest of HTGAWM over a homecooked pasta dinner.  It doesn't sound like I did anything extraordinary over the weekend huh ? But it was amazing for me thanks to the much needed rest (and good time with the husband).  Sometimes we look to long holidays and theme parks and big parties for amazingness – sometimes we find them there and rightly so.  But also sometimes the...

A Few Thoughts From a Few Passages

Matthew 4:17 From 2000+ years ago, Jesus was already preaching, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near". Was he saying that the kingdom was near, therefore we should repent? Or was He saying that our repentance will bring the kingdom nearer? "Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is on heaven" is brought as repentance is chosen. Matthew 4:18-22 Jesus calls James and John to follow him and "immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him". We humans worry. We worry a lot. What if we do this, then what happens to that? What if we do that, then what happens to this? We feel the need to "bao-ge-liao" (take every single thing) sometimes. But seriously, who can? This passage specifically mentions James and John leaving their father (who was with them at that time). There is no mention of whether their father was a believer or well or anything. That means that that was not the point. The point was that Jesus call...

Kaya Coconut Jam

Image
Ingredients 250ml coconut milk 5 eggs 230g sugar 7 pandan leaves Directions Blend pandan leaves for 10ml of essence. If dry, add very little water. Sieve, then press down with a spoon to get the essence. Heat pot of water – bring to a boil. Add the mixture of sugar and eggs to it. Mix nicely, then pour in coconut milk and leaf essence. Stir every 10 minutes so it hardens evenly. Do so for an hour until there's a good consistency. Let it cool. From... must be somewhere. Made it a few years back and wanted to document it.

E was helping out at a wedding so we had to be there early. With a sketchbook, pen, and phone, this happened.

It Matters

I was reading the news and came across a few sad stories. One about a child who plotted to kill her parents, and another about teens who killed their friend because he was "so boring" – and stabbed him 120 times. Who does that? Why do they do that? And then I read a story about how people don't receive proper (mental) treatment when they need it, or they are not followed up on appropriately and this leads to negative consequences. It made me think. It made me think that we all need to have a sense that what we do really matters . The daily things we do might seem minor to us; things such as calling a patient, clearing away broken glass, not texting while driving etc. In actual fact, those very actions could mean so much to others. It could be the difference of a future and a life changed.

Why We Should Have Sufficient Sleep

"We live in a world where experts tell us we have a sleep debt bigger than the national debt. An estimated 24,000 people die every year in car accidents caused by sleep deprivation and fatigue. Lack of sleep causes people to argue with spouses and friends, do subpar work, be less loving and more irritable." –From sorry-I-forgot-to-note-the-source Okay, goodnight!

Game Obsession: Why Is Fallout Shelter so Addictive?

Image
Have you heard of the new game which has knocked Candy Crush Saga from Apple's #3 grossing games spot? E started playing and downloaded it for me and now, I'm quite hooked. The game is... ... Fallout Shelter. Every few minutes I check my phone (granted that today is a Saturday where I'm not in the office) to collect energy, water, food and more. The more I get, the more rooms I can build in the vaults and the more residents I can have. It's addictive. I keep wanting to collect and build more. It reminds me of the one other game I used to play this obsessively – Snoopy's Street Fair. It started with one colleague playing it, then a few of us other colleagues downloaded it, and soon, we were all playing it on the way to work and on the way home. There was this drive to quickly log in and "tap" the characters/items to collect something, gain points or build up our site. How do we get so addicted to such games? What drives us? It could be the d...
