A Few Things

Inception  Last night I watched a show where a man woke up and realised it was all a dream. After that in my sleep I dreamt I was waking up from a dream over and over again. It was very tiring because I kept waking up – but not really because I was dreaming. I think I was quite confused.  Got bak kwa? I was recently in Singapore where my Dad got me some pork floss (fried pork snack) to bring back. At Melbourne customs I declared bringing meat into the country. The guy checking my bag said, Bee Cheng Hiang? Yes. Got bak kwa? No, only pork floss. Okay. Yesss – loved that he mentioned Bee Cheng Hiang. It's like, you know me and my people mans. Old friends and old strangers Living overseas, it is hard to stay in touch with many friends. There are only a few you can properly keep in touch with. This trip back I visited some old familiar haunts like church and workplaces. In church there were old friends but also old strangers – people whom I've seen week after week for two decades...

Thank you

I have been very blessed to have had older people invest in me, in varying degrees. One of those places where I met many were during my first real internship placement in Singapore. Especially fond in my mind are Cheh who was so nurturing and gentle and generous, and Alice who told me to not be too hard on myself and to love myself more – words I could not understand at that time but understand better now. And then there was also other moments like when we didn't have to do the radio ad anymore because we had enough sales but Joanna let me do it because I wanted to and it would be an experience for me, and the time where Andy said I dressed nicely (I bought a blazer) and then had to tell me off because when I stood up... I was wearing inappropriate pants (okay fine, I was wearing berms), and also the mornings Soo Bin and I went swimming before work (that was the day I wore berms) and jammed on the keyboard together. Good days! So when I had to write an article for work, I ...

Mushroom hunting again

Image
So after our first failed attempt at Creswick, we went mushroom hunting at Macedon this time... and had a full bounty! There were lots of poisonous mushrooms (bright coloured and spotted), but also lots of pine mushrooms (the ones orange on top and below) and slippery jacks (slimy and spongey but tasty). They tend to grow together so when you find one, you find lots more. We only picked the ones we were 100% sure were okay, which we cooked for lunch at the forest, then dinner at home, and promptly got sick of mushrooms. But hey, I like mushrooms so much that I was back to eating them after a week.

The days of your youth

I get it now. Remember your Creator in the days of your youth But also, Remember your Creator of  the days of your youth I am bringing myself back to when I was 15. When it took years of trying before I finally read the Bible daily and desired for it and it filled me and it satisfied me and it gave me joy and there was overflow.

Stories

Life can be tough but it is so much sweeter when you know the story behind each individual. The more you know, the more you can love because you can only love what you know. That's why they say the greatest is to know and be known. Because then you can more deeply and thoroughly love and be loved. Art by Ken Done

Pink swirls

I was thinking of cheesecake the other day so we popped by a store to get some. Honestly they didn't taste that as I wanted so the craving wasn't satisfied, but I thought these pink meringues (with lovely bread in the background) warranted a mention.

Calling your finding

Image
Many people are trying to find their calling.   But that doesn't explain Marianne Money, bank manager, or Jim Kardwell, who owns a card company. Or Thomas Duck who started Ugly Duckling rent-a-car and Tito Beveridge who makes vodka. It doesn't explain why people named Dennis are more likely to become dentists...   I'm not sure that anyone has a calling. I think, instead, our culture creates situations where passionate people find a place where they can make an impact. When what you do is something that you make important, it doesn't matter so much what you do.   It's not that important where. It matters a lot how . With passion and care. — Seth Godin  Calling. Is there such thing as a "calling" – a person's ultimate purpose in life? The thing they were "meant" to do? I believe there's such a thing as "calling" for some. I also think sometimes we get too caught up in "finding our calling" that we don'...
