Sin is usually tied to some need or another. Indeed, sin is often the attempt to meet a legitimate need in an illegitimate way. If we don’t address that need in appropriate ways, we will go right on sinning. It may be that we need to learn to experience the love of God more fully so we can be liberated from petty jealousy that makes gossiping almost irresistible.
When the heart is well-ordered, we are not only increasingly free from sin, but also increasingly free from the desire to sin.
